Still Water. Towering Cliffs.

Lim Bay is a 12-kilometre channel cut deep into the Istrian peninsula, flanked on both sides by steep forested limestone cliffs that rise up to 200 metres above the water. It is a protected nature reserve — designated as a geomorphological and hydrogeological site of special importance since 1964 and declared a special marine reserve in 1980. The water is completely sheltered from open-sea exposure, glassy and calm in almost all conditions, and coloured a deep emerald green from the mix of freshwater springs and the sea. As a rowing environment, it is visually unlike anything else in Europe, and the flat, still water makes it well suited to training at any level.

The bay is also a working ecosystem. Lim Bay is one of the most productive shellfish farming areas on the Adriatic, and the oysters and mussels grown here are considered among the finest in Croatia. The combination of freshwater inflow and high oxygen concentration creates ideal conditions for farming, and several operators along the bay offer tastings directly from the water. Rowing through in the early morning, before the day-trip boats arrive, the channel has a stillness and a scale that stays with you.

The nearest base is Rovinj — one of the most celebrated towns on the Adriatic coast. The old town was originally a small island, later connected to the mainland to form the peninsula it occupies today, and its Venetian-era architecture, narrow cobbled streets, and densely packed pastel facades give it a character that is immediately recognisable. The Church of St. Euphemia, a Baroque structure built between 1725 and 1736, sits at the highest point of the old town and its 60-metre bell tower is visible from far out at sea. The harbour below is still working, with fishing boats moored alongside the restaurants and cafes that line the waterfront.

The food scene in Rovinj and across Istria is one of the strongest in Croatia. The region is known throughout Europe for its truffles, its olive oil, and its wines, and the restaurants in Rovinj draw visitors from across the continent specifically to eat. Fresh seafood, Istrian pasta dishes, and ingredients sourced from the surrounding countryside make for a dining culture that takes its produce seriously.
