Dubrovnik offers one of the most striking settings in European rowing: open water launched directly from the old city harbor at Posat, on the western edge of the Old Town just outside the Pile Gate. From there, the Old Town walls rise immediately behind you, and the island of Lokrum sits just offshore, a short pull across open sea.

This is open Adriatic water, and conditions here, like elsewhere along the Dalmatian coast, can vary with the wind, making for a genuinely engaging row. It's a rare stretch of sea, framed by a UNESCO World Heritage old town on one side and the island of Lokrum on the other, with little else in view but water, walls, and sky.

Dubrovnik's Old Town is one of the best-preserved fortified cities in Europe, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Its walls run an unbroken 1,940 meters around the city, built mainly between the 13th and 17th centuries, reaching up to 25 meters high in places. You can walk the full circuit and look down over red-tiled roofs, the harbor, and the open sea toward Lokrum. Fort Lovrijenac stands apart from the main walls on a rock above the water, historically watching for rivals arriving by sea.

Inside the walls, Stradun, the city's limestone-paved main street, polished to a shine by centuries of foot traffic, runs the length of the Old Town and is where Dubrovnik's daily life plays out, from morning espresso to the evening passeggiata. The food scene draws on Dalmatian tradition: fresh Adriatic seafood, black risotto, and local wines from the Pelješac peninsula and the islands nearby. A short boat ride from the old port takes you to Lokrum, a forested island with a botanical garden and a ruined Benedictine monastery, a quiet contrast to the activity of the Old Town just across the water. Dubrovnik rewards those who stay past the day-trip crowds, when the walls, the light, and the harbor settle into something closer to what the city has felt like for centuries.
